Leadership

The New Challenges of Leadership

In a scenario marked by uncertainty and volatility, where transformations unfold at extraordinary speed, the challenges of leadership are immense. There are no longer easy answers, and traditional models based on command and control can no longer cope with today’s complexity.

Leading today requires the ability to reconcile seemingly opposing forces (paradoxes), such as:

  • Driving change while creating stability;
  • Providing direction without inhibiting autonomy;
  • Balancing long-term vision with short-term pressure;
  • Cultivating alignment without sacrificing diversity of thought

It is like navigating without a compass, guiding the crew through presence, trust, and inspiration. If, in the past, defining strategies and managing resources was enough, what differentiates today’s leaders is their capacity to understand and inspire people, create meaning amidst ambiguity, and make decisions from higher levels of consciousness.

How to Develop Leadership

More than a role or responsibility, leadership is a set of competencies that can be developed and strengthened. However, in the current context, developing leadership goes far beyond training isolated skills. They remain important, but are no longer sufficient to lead effectively in such a complex and disruptive environment.

Preparing leaders for today’s challenges requires supporting their personal evolution through Vertical Development: an inner expansion that enables leaders to deepen their awareness of how they perceive reality, interpret challenges, and relate to themselves, to others and to the wider system.

Rather than simply acquiring new abilities, Vertical Development expands self-awareness, maturity, discernment, presence and impact. This process gives rise to more conscious and empathetic leadership, better equipped to hold difficult conversations, create clarity in uncertainty and mobilise people with authenticity.

Instead of focusing only on “acting” as a leader, it is about developing the “being” of a leader.

My Role as a Leadership Mentor and Coach

On a Vertical Development journey, I contribute with my experience and training in three ways, which can also be combined:

  • Evolutionary Mentoring, suitable for leadership development in areas or market segments in which my professional experience is relevant, such as retail, franchise operations and SMEs.
  • Executive and Leadership Coaching, when the focus is not the transfer of experience, but the leader’s personal evolution and the alignment between leadership and culture.
  • Leadership Assessments from Barrett Values Centre®, as a certified consultant, which enable a deep dive into the leader’s identity through their values, broadening their awareness of how they think, behave and make decisions.

If the client is an executive or entrepreneur seeking professional support for leadership development, I help them develop a leadership aligned with their identity and values, while also coherent with the context in which they operate.

If the client is an organisation, I support leadership development at the individual level but also in the collective dimension, especially in aligning leadership with organisational culture or diagnosing the organisation’s leadership culture.

In both cases, I act as a strategic partner, with the mission of helping clients move towards their goals (individual or collective), but above all, in their evolutionary journey in alignment with their identity (of leadership or culture).

Leadership Assessments

As a certified consultant of the Barrett Values Centre®, I use assessments that broaden leaders’ and teams’ awareness by connecting performance, purpose and culture. These tools are based on the Barrett Model®, developed by Richard Barrett, and applied through widely recognised technology, for its ease of use and the richness of insights. The methodology has been validated and refined over more than 25 years, across thousands of organisations worldwide.

The process offers different perspectives for a deep understanding of leadership:

Individual Values Assessment

A deep dive into the core values that shape the way a leader thinks, acts and decides. This inner exploration strengthens self-awareness and enhances authenticity.

Integrated 360° Feedback

A comprehensive multi-perspective leadership assessment that reveals practised values, perceived strengths, behavioural patterns and opportunities for growth.

Team Leadership Assessment

An analysis that uncovers what inspires leaders, how they collaborate and where the greatest alignment opportunities lie to build a future that is consistent with the organisation’s desired culture.

These tools enhance the understanding of the values that guide decisions and behaviours, helping to identify inherent leadership strengths and potential areas for development. They also strengthen collective awareness in executive teams and provide an integrated view of leadership across different units or departments, enabling more strategic decisions, aligned to desired culture.

Expected Outcomes

The new leadership paradigm is strongly rooted in human connection, empathy, authenticity, and the creation of cultures based on trust and collaboration. More than technical skills, a leader’s values, and their alignment with organisational strategy and culture, are the true differentiator in today’s corporate context.

In this sense, Vertical Development has the power to awaken in leaders:

  • Greater awareness of who they are, their needs and motivations;
  • Greater understanding of their mental patterns and beliefs, and how they shape their behaviour and decisions;
  • Greater clarity about their strengths and opportunities for development;
  • Expansion of systemic vision and the ability to integrate firmness and care, direction and openness, people and purpose;
  • More conscious behavior, aligned with their own values, culture, and organisational strategy.

It is within this space of intentional evolution that leaders become reference points for their teams, create safe environments for learning and innovation, and increase the positive impact they leave throughout their journeys.
