Why use values-based assessments?
- Our values, whether conscious or unconscious, reflect our needs and motivations. They make up our identity by clarifying what is most important to us. Values are strong influencers of our behaviour and decisions.
- When our actions are aligned with our values, we feel in harmony and balance. But if, for whatever reason, our actions go against our values, this negatively affects our emotions and our wellbeing.
- Some personal values are more permanent. They are firmly rooted in our identity and remain with us throughout our lives. But there are others that can lose or gain importance as a result of our experiences and the way we assimilate and process them. For this reason, personal reflection on values is very useful at several moments, especially those when we feel the need to review directions and seek meaning (purpose) in what we do.
- In the organizational context, all people carry their personal values with them and are affected, positively or negatively, by the values experienced in the organization. When personal and organizational values are compatible, there is an increase in wellbeing and commitment to work. When they are not, people feel demotivated and, naturally, this also affects their performance.
- Organizational values are the foundation of culture. Not the declared ones, but those perceived from the behavior of leaders and other elements that reveal the culture: communication, layout, norms and policies, rituals and the dynamics of interaction between people. Knowing the values that are at the root of the culture, and understanding how they connect with people’s values and also with the desired culture – the one that supports the organization’s strategy, is the first step on the culture development journey.
The Barrett Model®
All the assessment tools presented below are based on the Barrett Model®, developed by Richard Barrett. This model, inspired by Abraham Maslow‘s Hierarchy of Needs and refined over more than two decades of practical experience with countless organizations, identifies seven fundamental areas covering human needs and motivations.
The Barrett Model® offers an extremely valuable framework for understanding personal and organizational values, how they connect and define culture, levels of entropy and alignment, as well as opportunities for personal and organizational development.
Leadership Values Assessments
The new leadership paradigm is strongly based on human connections, empathy, authenticity, and on building cultures based on trust and collaboration. More than technical skills, the leader’s values, and their cultural and strategic alignment with the organization, are the great differentiator in the contemporary corporate context.
Leadership values assessments offer the opportunity to broaden the leader’s awareness of who they truly are, understand the impact of their behavior on the team, identify development opportunities and find more meaning and purpose in their work.
Barret AnalyticsTM offers a varied menu of options for assessing leadership values, with or without 360o feedback.

Organizational Culture Assessments
There are four principles, or “mantras”, that shape the philosophical foundations of the work done by Richard Barrett, founder of the Barrett Values Centre®:
- Cultural capital is the new frontier of competitive advantage – because products and services are easy to copy, but culture is not.
- Organizations don’t transform themselves – people do.
- Organizational transformation begins with the cultural transformation of leaders.
- Measuring is important – measurement generates indicators and provides direction for management.
Organizational culture development begins with its measurement (diagnosis). To measure culture through values (its foundation), Barret AnalyticsTM offers a methodology that is scalable, customizable and available in more than 60 languages, with various assessment options to choose from, according to your organization’s profile and needs.

Wellbeing Assessment
Barrett Values Centre® launched its Wellbeing Assessment in 2022, to meet a growing demand from organizations in this field. This assessment adds to its portfolio a tool that, in itself, is already very powerful as it provides not only an understanding of levels of wellbeing, but also of the elements that impact in positive or negative ways the emotional state of its employees, as well as emerging aspirations for intervention.
When combined with the Leadership and Culture assessments, it provides a deep and systemic view of the organization from the perspective of the people who are part of it, creating the foundations for more humanistic management – which is also fundamental for boosting results. After all, we have three important and interconnected themes: leadership behavior defines the organization’s culture, and culture creates a dynamic that can either facilitate or create barriers to people’s wellbeing and happiness.
In times of such uncertainty and volatility, investing in people’s wellbeing and happiness means going beyond the creation of a great competitive advantage, but also contributing to a more humane and sustainable business model.
